A Center with an Ethical and Innovative Approach to Surgery

The Barcelona International Centre for Orthopaedic Surgery (B.I.C.O.S) is committed to providing high quality treatment for adults with orthopaedic disorders. Its focus is to provide in depth, evidence-based medical attention to patients in their native language by a group of highly qualified experts in the field of adult reconstructive surgery based in Barcelona, Spain. We believe in an ethical approach to medicine based on solidarity with our patients needs and circumstances. International travel and medical treatment are complex issues, but we try and cater for each patient´s personalized needs and requirements, while maintaining our standard of care.

The group consists of some of the country's most experienced and well-trained surgeons having performed thousands of orthopaedic procedures from joint replacement, spinal fusions to arthroscopic reconstructions. They include United States and United Kingdom fellowship trained surgeons in spine, adult reconstructive surgery through arthroscopy and joint replacement. We are experimented surgeons with diverse backgrounds and international training and can therefore understand the nuances that people from different cultural backgrounds look for in a doctor-patient relationship.

Many local and international patients have previously received comprehensive orthopaedic treatment and care through them. We strive to provide personal attention to local Catalan as well as foreign patients considering their backgrounds and cultures. Our orthopaedic surgeons are fluent in English, Spanish, Catalan, Pakistani (Urdu), and Swahili. We incorporate native Arabic, Russian and Chinese interpreters if needed. Our surgeons have both local and international fellowship training and have an in depth understanding of the functioning of the local healthcare system for patients requiring more comprehensive care and referrals.

One of the principals behind BICOS´ medical practise (and a reflection of their members personal beliefs) is that of transparency, honesty, and ethical management of the medical business. An effort has been conscientiously made to have no conflicting ties with medical industry or implant companies, We have no disclosures or conflicts of interest in our practise. The implants indicated and principles applied in our practise are solely based on implant survival from peer review journals and registry data.  

Our ideal is to provide an honest, direct solution to different orthopaedic problems through high quality evidence-based medicine with a genuine concern for each patient. We believe in addressing each patients concern after providing a clear diagnosis with a short, mid and long term plan depending on their illness or injury. It is important to us that the patient understands and becomes involved in addressing their musculoskeletal problems. We believe that our patients are our partners and we want to empower them with knowledge and education about their pathology while using the most up to date techniques and treatment options available. Solidarity and ethics are important values for us from our continued work in providing healthcare in underprivileged regions where we have continued clinical and education programs. We strive to provide a solution for patients under difficult circumstances as we believe that healthcare is a right and necessity. We consider the practise of medicine as a vocation and a privilege and not as a business. Our practice is based in two separate outpatient-clinics (Clinica Teknon and Catalonia medical centres) but all surgeries are done at the Joint Commission International approved Clinica Teknon.
